The Cuckoo Followed
Day 40 at Gut Nisdorf
Wake-up feel: 6.
Woke at 4:50. Deep sleep the night before — at some point I came awake not knowing left from right. Took a moment. Reoriented. Back under.
A dream before waking: a woman said she had lost her key, and that was why she needed to stay. I turned this over in the dark. A woman without the key.
Almost no pain on the right side now.
This morning: first cuckoo of the year.
The call came before I reached the Bodden road. A slight breeze from the north. Ripples on the water. A lone pair of swans — still, close to the reed.
I kept walking. The cuckoo moved too — landing ahead on a tree a little distance away, calling from the new branch. A few metres of silence. Then the call again.
Leaf day — water element, interior quality. The fluid body more receptive, depth surfacing. Moon in Scorpio until this evening. Fruit day from 19:00 — fire element, warmth, the day opening outward.
In the Wendish tradition — the people who lived on this coast before the German settlement — the cuckoo was not a seasonal marker. It was a soul.
The cuckoo moved ahead each time. I kept walking.
