At the Last Minute

Up at 4:30. Out before the sun.

The wind of the last few days had started to ease. The Bodden was
settling with it. The reed fields to the left. The rapeseed field
to the right. The horizon still dark where the sun was about to
come over.

A lone duck crossed overhead, flying toward the rising sun.

Then the pair — the ones I had seen before on this road — standing
in the middle of the way, blocking it. They turned their backs to
me. They did not move. I kept walking. At the last minute they
took flight.

At the turning point, the large black bird I had watched from the
tree the other day lifted from the reeds and flew south-south-east
over the reed fields. It did not call.

Today the Constellation closes at 12:00.
